Exploring the Silence in the Age of Noise

The Purpose

Ding. Ring. Buzz. Repeat.

These are all too familiar sounds.

The perpetual tapping of our fingers.

The incessant buzzing from a group chat.

The blaring alarm that goes off every morning.

The ceaseless expectation of a response that we feel so entitled to.

Technology is permanent, consuming our lives and precious time on this earth. Regardless of its benefits, technology can be highly influential, detrimental to our mental health and extremely addicting. Because of this, we are unable to sit and enjoy the simplicity of life.

We are unable to reflect on ourselves.

We are unable to be content with silence.

We are unable to truly appreciate nature and the beauty around us.

Basing my idea for this project off of Erling Kagge's book Silence: In the Age of Noise, I aim to provide a perspective of nature meant to spark the silence within ourselves.

Boulder, Colorado is known for its endless hiking trails, gorgeous mountains, and surreal views. It's also what I call home. Hiking the steep rocks and blending into the miles of thick forest provoked an interest in the way we view nature and appreciate its meditative healing qualities when in it.

Explore this website to see the beautiful hiking spots of Colorado, and listen to audio recordings meant to place you in that particular location (even if you are thousands of miles away). Check out the extra videos to get a better feel for the areas.

I challenge you to find the silence around and within yourself, whether that be through nature or your own personal doings.
